LPG bottling plant inaugurated in Odisha

The LPG bottling plant at Balangir, Odisha was recently dedicated to the nation by Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal. This BPCL plant was to be dedicated to the nation by the Vice President, M. Venkaiah Naidu, but he could not come due to bad weather. The plant has been built in a record time of 19 months at a cost of Rs 103 crores. The foundation stone of the plant was laid on May 21, 2018, by the then Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Skill Development, Dharmendra Pradhan.

Russia deploys first Avangard hypersonic missiles into service

Russia has deployed the first hypersonic missile Avangard. Russia's Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu has informed President Vladimir Putin about the deployment of Avangard. This information was released in the official statement. According to the media reports, the direction of this missile can be changed even in the air. It caught the speed of Mach 27, which is equivalent to about 33,000 kilometers per hour, during the test. This is the first of its kind missile in the world. This missile can’t be caught by any radar.

Govt to provide free WiFi to all villages till March 2020

The Union Government has announced that it will provide free wifi services to all villages across India through its BharatNet project by March 2020. The free internet will be provided in schools, skill development centers and the health care centres in the villages. The project has also already been implemented in 1.3 lakh Gram Panchayats.

MiG 27: Indian Air Force bids farewell to 'hero' of Kargil conflict

MiG-27 fighter jet is known as the Kargil war hero that decommissioned today with its last flight. It was an Indian Air Force’s lethal fighter aircraft which became the main attacker during 1999 Kargil war. The last fighter aircraft of the squadron took a flight from Jodhpur airbase. The squadron will be number plated on 31 March 2020 which means it will no more in the service. The MiG-27's squadron in Jodhpur is the last batch of aircraft. However, this squadron was known as one of the IAF’s best team.

Hemant Soren to be sworn in as Jharkhand CM on 29th December

Hemant Soren is scheduled to take oath as the new Chief Minister of Jharkhand at 2 pm on December 29, 2019 at the Morabadi Ground in Ranchi. Soren will be administered the oath of the office by Jharkhand Governor Droupadi Murmu. Hemant Soren had gone to the Raj Bhavan on December 24 to stake claim to form the government in Jharkhand. The JMM Chief had submitted 50 letters of support to the Jharkhand Governor. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha will form the new government in the state in alliance with the Congress and the RJD. Their pre-poll alliance won a total of 47 seats in the 81-member Jharkhand assembly in the recently concluded Jharkhand elections 2019.

Atal Bhujal Yojana

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Atal Bhujal Yojana on the occasion of 95th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The Central Government has allocated Rs. 6000 crores for this scheme. According to Union Minister Prakash Javadekar, the Atal Bhujal Yojana has been brought to deal with the groundwater problem. It will cost Rs 6000 crores rupees in 5 years. However Rs. 3000 crore will be given by World Bank and Rs 3000 crores to be spent by the government. The Government has selected seven states for this scheme according to the level of groundwater exploitation in these areas. The Government has also selected these areas due to their institutional readiness, degradation, established legal and regulatory instruments, and experience in implementing initiatives related to groundwater management.

Renowned Hindi author Ganga Prasad Vimal dies

Famous Hindi author Ganga Prasad Vimal was recently killed in a road accident in Sri Lanka. He was 80. Vimal was traveling along with his daughter and granddaughter who were also killed in the same road accident. Ganga Prasad was an author, translator, and professor at Jawahar Lal Nehru University. According to the media reports, Ganga Prasad Vimal was going with his family in a van from South Galle Town towards Colombo. Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank', HRD Minister, paid his condolences on his demise. He said that Ganga Prasad Vimal's demise is a huge loss to the world of Hindi literature and a personal loss for him.

PM Modi renames Rohtang Tunnel as Atal Tunnel

The central government has renamed Rohtang Pass as 'Atal Tunnel' recently. This tunnel connects Leh and Manali regions. It was announced on the occasion of 95th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the Rohtang Tunnel connecting Manali to Leh will now be known as Atal Tunnel. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said in his tweet that the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has fulfilled the long pending demand of re-naming the tunnel. He also said that it will be a tribute to the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. About four thousand crore rupees will be spent on its construction. The construction cost of the tunnel was estimated to be around Rs 1400 crore in the initial phase. The construction of the Tunnel delayed about five years due to the leakage of water from Seri River situated right above the tunnel.

Delhi cabinet approves electric vehicles policy to control pollution

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced that the Delhi Cabinet has passed the Electric Vehicle Policy to tackle air pollution. Kejriwal said that the government will give subsidies to promote e-vehicles. He said that an electric vehicle board will be formed to implement this policy. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that the objective of this policy is to make Delhi the capital of electric vehicles in India.

Chief of Defence Staff: India’s first four-star post gets approval from cabinet

Chief of Defence Staff: Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has approved the creation of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) post. It will be a four-star post. The country will soon get its first Chief of Defense Staff. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced to create this post from Red Fort on 15 August this year. The purpose of creating the Chief of Defence Staff post is to increase the coordination between the three armies. A committee was formed under the chairmanship of National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to finalize the modalities and responsibilities of CDS.

Eight West African countries have announced a new common currency "Eco" to end French dominance from the region. These Eight countries are - Mali, Niger, Senegal, Benin, Togo, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, and Ivory Coast. These countries have decided to abolish the existence of the French colonial period, and they will use a new currency "Eco" in their country instead of the currently prevalent currency 'CFA franc'. This new currency will come into circulation in 2020.

The government of India has launched National Broadband Mission (NBM) with an aim to provide an internet connection to all villages by 2022. The affiliated parties will invest Rs 7 lakh crore in the coming years. In rural areas, broadband access will be made available on a universal and equal basis. Cabinet approves introduction of Aircraft (Amendment) Bill 2019

The Union Cabinet approved the introduction of Aircraft (Amendment) Bill 2019 in the Parliament to amend the Aircraft Act, 1934. The Bill proposes a penalty of a fine of up to Rs 1 crore in case of negligence in aircraft operation. Earlier, the penalty of maximum Rs. 10 lakh was imposed for such negligence. The Bills imposes a penalty on the person carrying arms, ammunition or dangerous goods that endanger the safety of the aircraft in any way.

AP cabinet approves Disha Act to provide harsher punishment for crimes against women, children

The Andhra Pradesh Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, also known as the Disha Act, was passed by the Andhra Pradesh cabinet recently for its enactment. The Act proposes harsh punishment for those who commit a crime against women. The legislation aims to protect women and children in Andhra Pradesh. One of the sections of the act calls for speedy trial of a case involving a heinous crime against women such as rape.

Parliament passes bill to extend SC-ST reservation quota in Lok Sabha, state assemblies.

The Parliament has passed the bill that proposes to extend the reservation quota for SCs and STs in the Lok Sabha and the state assemblies by another 10 years. The Constitution (126th) Amendment Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha on December 12, 2019. The bill was passed in the upper house of the Parliament with 163 votes in favour and none against. The voting had taken place through division, as it was a constitution amendment bill. The Lok Sabha had passed the bill on December 10, 2019. The Constitution (126th) Amendment Bill will now be sent to the states for ratification by at least 50 per cent of the assemblies before it is brought into force.

India-China Joint Military Exercise Begins in Meghalaya

A joint military exercise between India and China began at Umroi Cantonment, Meghalaya. It is an annual military exercise held under a United Nations mandate. It will be conducted between December 7 to December 20, 2019, with a theme against terrorism. Supreme Court dismisses Rafale review petitions

The Supreme Court has dismissed all review petitions filed against its previous judgement on the Rafale deal. The Supreme Court had on December 14, 2018 declined to order an independent probe to look into the corruption allegations in the central government's Rafale deal. The judgement was delivered by an SC bench comprising outgoing CJI Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph. The Supreme Court observed that the review petitions lacked merit. The review petitions were filed by Prashant Bhushan, Yashwant Sinha and Arun Shourie. The Supreme Court had reserved its order on the review petitions on May 10, ahead of the apex court's summer break. The petitioners had filed the review petitions based on certain leaked documents by the media and argued that the government had withheld some material information from the court regarding its Rafale deal with France's Dassault Aviation. The SC bench had on April 10 rejected the centre's objections against the examination of the documents. Attorney General KK Venugopal, representing the government, had argued then that the documents were obtained without authorization and so, it violated the Official Secrets Act. The Supreme Court, however, rejected the objections saying that the illegality of obtaining the documents did not affect their examination by the court if they were relevant for the hearing.

Former president Evo Morales granted asylum by Mexico

Mexico has granted asylum to Bolivia's former President Evo Morales in the country. Morales resigned on November 10 amid mounting pressure from the military and the public following allegations of manipulation of election results. Mexico government said that the asylum was granted on humanitarian grounds because the life of Evo Morales in Bolivia was threatened. Evo Morales had to resign from the post of president due to fierce protests against him after the controversial presidential election. He left Bolivia on a Mexican Air Force plane. Mexico's President Andres Manuel López Obrador also supported him to resign. He said that Morales' bold move prevented the crisis in Bolivia.

President's Rule imposed in Maharashtra as all parties failed to prove majority

President's rule was imposed in Maharashtra on November 12 amidst the deadlock over government formation since last month's assembly elections. Earlier, the Union Cabinet recommended President's rule in the state on the report of Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. President's rule has been imposed for 6 months, however, if any party proves the majority during this period, a government can be formed. The Governor said in his report that as per the present situation in the state that a permanent government is not possible even 15 days after the election results have declared. The governor said that all efforts have been made to form the government, but he sees no possibility of a permanent government in Maharashtra. Earlier, Shiv Sena on November 11 claimed that the NCP and the Congress will make an alliance with them to form a government without BJP in Maharashtra. However, Shiv Sena could not prove its majority despite the extended deadline.

Ayodhya Verdict on Ram Janmabhoomi Babri Masjid land dispute has been pronounced by the Supreme Court of India. Global Climate Emergency: A joint declaration by 11,258 scientists of 153 countries

Global Climate Emergency: More than 11,000 scientists from 153 countries have declared a climate emergency recently. On the other hand, the US has made a formal announcement to withdraw its membership from the Paris Agreement. These scientists have warned that if timely steps are not taken to protect the planet, 'untold suffering' will emerge. According to a report published in BioScience Journal 11,258 signatories, including 69 from India, declared a climate emergency and provided a set of effective mitigating actions. Scientists claimed that this joint declaration is a result of scientific analysis of more than 40 years of research. The study was published by environmentalist William J Ripple of Oregon State University and Christopher Wolf of Oregon State University. Researchers from Australia and South Africa were also involved in this. It clearly states the emission of greenhouse gases is a big challenge.

Paris Climate Agreement: US formally notifies UN about its withdrawal from climate accord

The United States formally informed the United Nations about its intention to withdraw from the Paris Climate agreement on November 4, 2019. The announcement of the US exit from the deal was made by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Mike Pompeo stated that the agreement had imposed an unfair economic burden on the US. He said that the US was proud of its record as a world leader in reducing all emissions. He further stated that the US has successfully fostered resilience and grown its economy and ensured energy for its citizens. He said that the US follows a more realistic model. The formal notification has initiated a year-long withdrawal process of the US from the global climate agreement. The United States will properly exit the climate deal a day after the US Presidential Elections 2020.

SC expresses alarm, bans construction, demolition activities, power cuts in Delhi/NCR

The Supreme Court expressing alarm on severe air pollution level in Delhi-NCR directed an immediate halt to stubble burning in Punjab, Haryana, and UP and banned all construction and demolition activities in Delhi-NCR till further orders. Supreme Court Judge Arun Mishra stated that Delhi is choking every year and we are not able to do anything. “Farmers cannot kill others for their own livelihood. We have no sympathy for farmers if they keep burning crops,” said Justice Mishra with grave concern and added saying, “this cannot happen in a civilised country. The right to life is the most important. We want to burn our crop and let others die' we can't live like this.”

Odd-Even rule in Delhi 2019

The odd-even scheme was launched by the Delhi Government on November 4 to combat the hazardous smog that has enveloped the national capital. The scheme has been launched for 12 days from November 4-15, 2019. The first day of the odd-even rule reportedly resulted in a major dip in the air pollution levels in Delhi. IAF successfully test-fires two BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles

The Indian Air Force has successfully carried out the test-firing of two BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles. The missiles were launched from a mobile platform at Trak Island in the Andaman Nicobar islands. The twin launches were carried out as a part of the Indian Air Force’s routine operational training. NCRB Report: Uttar Pradesh tops the list in crimes against women in country

First all-female spacewalk: Christina Koch & Jessica Meir made history; fixed broken part of ISS

NASA astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir recorded history on October 18, 2019 by completing the first all-female spacewalk. Koch and Meir did this to fix a broken part of the International Space Station (ISS). They walked out to replace a power controller of the ISS that got damaged last week. Koch and Meir fixed the damaged part by using wrenches, screwdrivers and power-grip tools. No man was involved in this mission, termed as the Extravehicular Activity (EVA). Koch was first to move out of the ISS and Meir came after with a tool bag. Initially, the mission was scheduled for 5.5 hours, however, it stretched up to 7 hours due to some additional tasks. While Meir made her debut in spacewalking through this mission, it was the 4th spacewalk for Koch. Meir is a marine biologist and Koch is an electrical engineer. Both of them are the members of NASA's Astronaut Class of 2013, the only group that has an equal number of men & women.

Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Council abolished; reduced to Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh

ammu & Kashmir Legislative Council got abolished on October 18, 2019 under Section 57 of the J&K Reorganisation Bill, 2019. Global Hunger Index 2019 Report: India ranked 102 out of 117 countries in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2019 that is placed at much below to its South Asian neighbours such as Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan. The GHI report pointed out that "India is suffering from a serious hunger problem". The Global Hunger Index measures countries on a 100 points scale, where a score of 0 (zero) is considered as best performing countries and 100 is the worst. The Global Hunger Index report, prepared and published jointly by Irish aid agency Concern Worldwide and German organization Welt Hunger Hilfewas, calculated on the basis of four indicators that are - child mortality, undernourishment, child wasting (weight for age) and child stunting. The major focus of the index was on the relation between climate change and hunger. The report also explains the impact of extreme weather on food production and food security.

Financial Action Task Force on October 16, 2019, decides to keep Pakistan on its ‘Grey List’ till February 2020. FATF directs Pakistan to take extra strict measures to eliminate terror funding and money laundering. The final decision in this regard will be taken by the FATF in February 2020. Pakistan was added to the FATF's ‘grey list’ on June 27, 2018. The list contains the names of countries that are involved in providing monetary assistance to terrorism and related causes. The decision was taken during the FATF meeting on Money Laundering in Paris. At the FATF talks in Paris, a delegation led by Dr. Shamshad Akhtar, Pakistani Interim Minister for Finance and Planning, apprised the FATF of steps taken by Pakistan to curb terror financing and money laundering, pleading removal of Pakistan's name from FATF grey list.

Lakshmi Vilas Bank-Indiabulls Housing Finance merger: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rejected the proposed and much-talked merger plan between Indiabulls Housing Finance and Lakshmi Vilas bank. The reason for rejection is not publically available. However, in a statement, Lakshmi Vilas Bank said: "This is to inform that RBI vide their letter dated October 09, 2019, informed that the application for voluntary amalgamation of Indiabulls Housing Finance Ltd and Indiabulls Commercial Credit Ltd with Lakshmi Vilas Bank Ltd cannot be approved." Earlier, the Competition Commission of India had already given its approval for the merger in the month of June this year. It is speculated the RBI rejected the merger deal because of the high level of bad loans, negative return on assets in recent years and lack of risk management capabilities. Due to these performance-related concerns, RBI had put Lakshmi Vilas Bank (LVB) under the Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) framework.

Government approves 4-fold hike in assistance to families of battle casualties

The Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh has approved a four-fold increase in the monetary assistance provided to the next of kin of all battle casualties. With this, the fund provided to the families of battle casualties will be hiked from existing Rs 2 lakh to 8 lakh. The fund will be provided from the Army Battle Casualties Welfare Fund (ABCWF). The families of all categories of battle casualties will be able to avail the monetary assistance. The move fulfills a long-standing demand of the Indian Army. Currently, the monetary assistance worth Rs 2 lakh was given to the families of battle casualties in case of death or those who sustained 60 percent and above disability besides other categories.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced that Chandrayaan2’s Orbiter payload CLASS has detected charged particles on the moon in its first few days of observation. CLASS has observed intensity variations in its first passage through Moon’s orbit. ISRO said in a statement released on its official website that CLASS is able to detect direct signatures of elements present in the lunar soil. It was also found by the CLASS that best observation occurred when the Sun provides a rich source of x-rays to illuminate the lunar surface. The payload can also detect secondary x-ray emissions resulted from the lunar surface to find out elements like Na, Ca, Al, Si, Ti and Fe.

Nizam Funds case: India wins £35m worth case at UK court, Pakistan's claim dismissed

India has won a decades-old legal dispute over funds belonging to the 7th Nizam of Hyderabad at the UK Court. The High Court of England and Wales, in a landmark judgement on October 2, 2019, ruled in favour of India and the Nizam's descendants and dismissed Pakistan's claims in a legal battle involving £35m. The judgement was delivered by Justice Marcus Smith. The court ruled that those claiming in right of Nizam VII- his grandsons and India were now entitled to the Nizam Funds.

Rajasthan bans Tobacco, Pan Masala on Gandhi Jayanti

The Rajasthan Government banned certain categories of Pan Masala and flavoured Tobacco products made of magnesium, carbonate, nicotine and mineral oil. Rajasthan is the third state to impose this ban after Maharashtra and Bihar. The medical department of Rajasthan will start taking samples of these products, and after investigation, if products found these substances will be banned. The government has banned these items under the Food Security Act. Every year, thousands of people in Rajasthan lose their lives due to cancer and consumption of tobacco. Now any kind of sale, production or storage of these products will not be allowed in the Rajasthan.

Scientists Discovered ‘Ancient River’ in Uttar Pradesh

A team of researchers and experts have found an undiscovered dried-up river during the geophysical survey in the Kaushambi and Prayagraj region in Uttar Pradesh. The most important aspect of this discovery is that this river was a link between Ganga and Yamuna rivers. The Union Jal Shakti Ministry wants to develop this river as a potential groundwater recharge source. A team of researchers and scientists from the CSIR-NGRI (National Geophysical Research Institute) and the Central Groundwater Board found this river.

Water has been found by scientists in the atmosphere of a potentially habitable super-Earth. The exoplanet, named K2-18b, is twice the size and eight times the mass of Earth. K2-18b is the first planet outside the solar system in the habitable zone of its star. Gujarat Reduces Traffic Violation Fines under New Motor Vehicles Act

The Gujarat government has reduced the challan amounts imposed under the new Motor Vehicles Act (MVA) for breaking traffic rules. BJP-ruled Gujarat is the first state to do so. The new rules will come into effect from September 16 onwards. The Delhi government is also considering reducing certain penalties. Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani announced that the fines laid down in the new act were the maximum suggested and his government had reduced them after detailed deliberations. According to the various reports, the Gujarat government reduced fines on traffic violations up to 50 per cent.

The government has earmarked funds worth Rs 10,774 Crores for the scheme for the next three years. All small and marginal farmers, who are currently between the age of 18-40 years, can apply for the scheme. The farmer’s monthly contribution can be made from the installments of PM-KISAN or through CSCs.

The Supreme Court ruled on September 5, 2019 that investigation into crimes is a "prerogative" of the police and the courts should not interfere in its every stage. The top court said that a court’s interference at each stage would affect the normal course of the investigation. The ruling was delivered by an SC bench comprising Justices R Banumathi and A S Bopanna while denying anticipatory bail to former Union Minister P Chidambaram in the INX Media money laundering case. The top court said that the investigation agency should be the one deciding the course of the probe and the judiciary should be kept out of it, except in rare cases.

Environment Ministry releases Rs 47,436 crore for afforestation to various states

The Union Ministry of Environment has released Rs 47,436 crore of CAMPA funds to various states for afforestation projects. The transferred funds will not affect the state budget for forests, it will be an additional fund. The funds were handed over by Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar. The Environment Ministry has released the additional fund to the states to give a boost to forestry activities to achieve the objectives of the Nationally-Determined Contributions (NDCs) of increasing forest and tree cover. The increase in forest and tree cover will create an additional carbon sink equivalent to 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide by the year 2030.
